1876 Presidential Election

1876 VAP uses the Census national resident population age 21 and over: 22,724,000, published in Table 1 of Nonvoting Americans (P23-102, April 1980). The voting age was 21 in every state. The population includes women, many of whom were barred from voting in 1876, along with other adults who were ineligible to vote. “Did Not Vote” is a population comparison residual, not a count of eligible people who chose not to vote. DC is included in the population estimate but could not vote for president until 1964; Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Wyoming were territories; North Dakota and South Dakota were part of Dakota Territory; present-day Oklahoma was not a state; Hawaii was an independent kingdom and was annexed in 1898. Colorado’s legislature selected its electors without a presidential popular vote, so the population comparison also includes Colorado adults who had no popular presidential ballot. “Other” includes all remaining presidential candidates. The population estimate is rounded to thousands. A state VAP comparison map is unavailable here because 1876 state population estimates have not been verified.
