1864 Presidential Election

1864 VAP uses the Census national resident population age 21 and over: 16,450,000, published in Table 1 of Nonvoting Americans (P23-102, April 1980). The voting age was 21 in every state. This population includes women, enslaved adults and other people barred from voting, and adults in seceded states without counted presidential votes. “Did Not Vote” is a population comparison residual, not a count of eligible people who chose not to vote. The APP popular-vote series covers 25 states. Congress excluded electoral returns from Louisiana and Tennessee. DC is included in the population estimate but could not vote for president until 1964. Alaska was Russian territory until its transfer to the United States in 1867. Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Wyoming were territories; North Dakota and South Dakota were part of Dakota Territory; present-day Oklahoma was not a state; Hawaii was an independent kingdom. “Other” is the 692 votes remaining in the APP totals; no distinct third-party movement is assigned to them. Population is rounded to thousands. A state VAP comparison map is unavailable here because 1864 state population estimates have not been verified.
