1872 Presidential Election

1872 VAP uses the Census national resident population age 21 and over: 20,176,000, published in Table 1 of Nonvoting Americans (P23-102, April 1980). The voting age was 21 in every state. The population includes women, many of whom were barred from voting in 1872, along with other adults who were ineligible to vote. “Did Not Vote” is a population comparison residual, not a count of eligible people who chose not to vote. DC is included in the population estimate but could not vote for president until 1964; Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Wyoming were territories; North Dakota and South Dakota were part of Dakota Territory; present-day Oklahoma was not a state; Hawaii was an independent kingdom and was annexed in 1898. “Other” includes all remaining presidential candidates.
